Rutgers Race Report - Cameron Cogburn
Leaving Ithaca at 5:45pm in a snowstorm. Passing at least a 15-car line in Vanya’s van on NY-79 in blinding snow. Stopping at Flying J’s truck stop for a buffet and pizza dinner and then driving 6 hours to Rutgers. Getting in late and waking up early. Everyone busting balls on a 2.4 miles TT. Scoring some points for Cornell. Djani, James and Jake riding their first time for Cornell. Going to the mom-and-pop Italian restaurant for lunch and the Fox soccer channel. Crits all afternoon with some horrific crashes. Crash in the A’s took out 5 riders and split the pack into 1/3 and 2/3. Brian and I worked hard in the former, but no else in our group did; we kept a consistent 50 m back from the pack but were pulled for some reason. Oh well. Amazing dinner at another Italian place that night followed by some movie watching and relaxing. Road Race today in gorgeous, sunny and warm weather. Ben Cheetham rocking into 2nd place in men’s C division. Steve getting taken out by a Drexel guy in the final turn of the B’s race. Brian and I in a bizarre A-race that had the race stopped, restarted and re-routed because there was too much blood on the road from one rider’s fall… Worked my ass off the front a good part of the race. Tried to hold it the entire last lap but got caught on the final corner by an all-out, “suicidal” Brian and the pack. Was able to get a mid/back pack finish with Brian right behind, though. Got some props afterwards for being so aggressive off the front…
Hopefully others can add more context to these words, but it was a fun weekend that saw Cornell score some major points, and hopefully we can get more people out. If I can with 7 classes/research/girlfriend, so can you! I thought it was only endurance mountain biking, but I think it’s safe to add road racing to the short list of things in cycling other than stamp collecting. Here’s to a great season ahead with lots of fun times sure to come.
